As Ranged is my preferred skill, I decided to make an attempt at a guide to train it effectively. As Defense is very important no matter what combat skill you train, this guide assumes that you will be training to a decent Defense level as well.
0 - 50 Ranged/Defense: Slayer
* Yea I know there is a lot between 0 and 60 ranged, but if you're also training Slayer you can get 0 - 55 slayer (for Broad Bolts, which are better and cheaper than Runite Bolts by a lot) in the time 50 Ranged and Defense takes. Up to around level 30 you can train both at the same time, but after that I suggest you switch to Ranged only to increase the damage you can do, thus increasing xp/hr. At 50 Ranged switch back to Defense and continue.
* As you unlock new gear feel free to upgrade, but ultimately you should end up with a Rune Crossbow and ranged shield (or Off-Hand Rune Crossbow) using Broad Bolts. Armor should be the best dragonhide you can use. If you can afford it, the Archer's Ring increases critical hit chance, thereby increasing damage.
* Also at level 30, you can do the quest Animal Magnetism for Ava's Device, which is very useful as it picks up your ammo, saving you a lot of money if you're lazy, like I am. At level 50 you can return to Ava for an upgrade to your device, which is recommended as the upgraded device has a higher critical chance.
50 - 70 Ranged/Defense: Blue Dragons
* Blue dragons are rather easy to kill at this level, using antifire potion with Anti-Dragon Shield (or praying Protect from Magic if dual-wielding) and can also yield a large amount of profit from selling bones and hides.
* If you train ranged to 70 first, I recommend training Defense at Waterfiends, described in the next section of the guide.
* At 70 Ranged, the Crystal Bow is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a replacement for your rune crossbow(s). The quest (and especially Agility requirements) can be a pain, but it's worth it in the end. As well as doing much higher damage, there is no ammo to worry about. The one you get as a reward from the quest has 2/10 charges, or 500 shots. A full bow has 2500 shots worth of charges. Simply recharge into a bow when it reverts to a seed. Don't buy a new one! Every time you recharge a seed the cost to recharge goes down. 1st: 900k | 2nd: 720k | 3rd: 540k | 4th: 360k | 5th and on: 180k
* At 70 Ranged you can use Saradomin's Murmur, the best Ranged amulet, which increases critical hit chance by 4.4%, which is .2% more than a Fury for 1/3 the price. Also at 70 Ranged (and Defense) you can use Karil the Tainted's Armor Set (priced at 1.3m last time I checked). The crossbow sucks, as it can only fire expensive, non-retrievable bolt racks. But if you only buy the 3 pieces of armor, it's a great choice. Lasting 15 hours in combat before degrading and needing repair for around 1m at Bob in Lumbridge, or less at an armor stand in a player-owned-home depending on your smithing level (500k at 99 smithing operating smithing cape). There is a limit of 1 piece per 4 hours, though, and it is shared between all items. This means if you want to buy them individually, you need to wait 8 hours or have someone buy other pieces for you. If you cannot afford this for training, simply use Royal D'hide body, chaps, and gloves with Karil's Coif. (As there is no other good coif at this level since FOG is dead)
70+ Ranged: Waterfiends
* Waterfiends give 934 xp in Ranged, as well as 308.2 Constitution xp.
* Recommended Setup:
* Karil's Armor Set (or Royal D'hide), Crystal Bow, Archer's Ring, Saradomin's Murmur equipped.
* Inventory should contain a Dramen Staff and Lobsters. If you have the required summoning level, bring a Bunyip along.
* The Dramen Staff, mentioned above, allows access to the Fairy Ring System. To use this, you must have completed Fairy Tale 1, and started Fairy Tale 2.
* If no fairy ring access, bring a Game's Necklace to teleport to Barbarian Outpost and run to Ancient Caverns.
* The Waterfiends in the Ancient Caverns are easiest to access, so that's where you should train. They are accessible after completing the Firemaking portion of Barbarian Training. See this guide. After completing training, simply jump into the whirlpool at the North end of the lake. To activate the Fairy Ring you also need to take 5 Bittercap Mushrooms to the caverns and plant them in the Fairy Ring spot on the West wall. Code: BJQ NOTE: You cannot take any familiars into the whirlpool. Only through the fairy ring.
* Waterfiends have around an 80% crimson charm drop rate, so it is a good idea to pick up the charms they drop to train summoning.
Okay so that's basically how I trained ranged... Here's what gear I use:
* Ava's Accumulator
* Karil's Set (without crossbow)
* Royal Crossbow
* Saradomin's Murmur
* Archer's Ring
You've probably noticed the lack of ability lists... I don't want to tell you what abilities to use. To be honest that's all part of your strategy. Only things I need to say are Rapid Fire and Regenerate. If you guys want a guide on how to use EOC abilities, let me know and I'll get to work on one.
